So You Want to Be in Men's Ministry as a Vocation...

If you've ever thought about being in full time men's ministry - like, earning money and supporting yourself - then you absolutely do NOT want to miss the Annual Summit. There will be several workshops that will give you lots of great perspective on what it takes to make it work.

Marty Granger with the Washington Area Coalition of Men's Ministries and Faith in the Family International will be conducting workshop on Building a Career in Men's Discipleship. Marty's Faith in the Family organization actually helps to incubate new ministries.

Roy Abbott and Tom Cheshire have both been running their own men's discipleship ministries for several years now. They will be running a workshop unofficially titled: Lessons Learned Along the Way From Two Experienced Warriors.

In addition to these workshops, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to meet guys that are building successful ministries. You can hang out with them and pick their brains for ideas to try, pitfalls to avoid, and encouragement from brothers in the battle.

Charles Cooper - Keynote Speaker

We're excited to have Charles Cooper as our keynote speaker on Friday morning. Dr. Cooper's church, The Vine (http://www.thevinecbc.org/), is clearly going after the men of the church. Just take a look at this graphic from the front of their website:

Dr. Cooper, or "Coop" as his friends call him, has led an interesting life, to say the least. He has been a professor, entrepreneur, Biblical antiquities seeker, PK speaker, church planter, and senior pastor to a multi-cultural congregation.

Man in the Mirror is honored to have Charles on the faculty of the Leadership Training Center, where he conducts No Man Left Behind Conferences all over the country. You won't want to miss this!

Welcome back to the Annual Summit blog, your location for updates on the 2010 Annual Summit. We'll use this blog to communicate with everyone who is coming, wants to come, wishes they could come or is just plain curious important information about the Summit.

You can use the blog to connect with others coming for things like meeting before or after (golf or Disney, anyone?), sharing lodging, or anything else you might want to talk about.

We'll also post info you might find interesting before you get here, and we'll blog from the event itself.

Dave Brown, pastor at Fellowship EPC in Michigan sent a long email with lots of great input. Here are just a few of his thoughts...

You guys put on a very helpful Summit. Your generosity, laser focus, variety of God Talks and interviews, input gathering workshops all contributed to a very positive experience for me. ... Thank you so much for all your efforts. I will implement many ideas and build some connections with Michigan men’s ministry leaders because of this conference.

Lasting Impressions from the Summit
MIM is generous with resources; meals; prayers and encouragements
MIM Staff are approachable, knowledgeable, direct, open, encouraging, real;
It would be better to come with 1-3 guys – a bit awkward at tables and on my own for Friday night meal. (meeting plan fell through)
It was refreshing to listen to visionary, strategic, practically oriented disciplemaking leaders.
I could use someone to come along side me – like a Brian Doyle – to take next steps.
I’d like to make contributions to MIM in SE Michigan by developing church, town, regional, denominational, Z4:10 applications of Men’s discipleship based on a well-established model at FEPC by next year.
My first next step is to find a point man and build a leadership team for Men’s Discipleship. This would be followed by participation w/team in NMLB training.
I believe that the next adaptation of the NMLB is a No one in the community left behind.
I think Pat belongs on the list of speakers at WCA Leadership Summit
God is at work in places I’ve not expected – Catholics, IPHC; UMC; ELCA
Worship using scripture reading was okay; I’d like to encourage musical praise/singing
Written Evaluations are parts of many conferences I go to. I think you’ll get better by offering guys a chance to provide such evaluations/suggestions.

137 people have come and gone from the Annual Summit this past weekend. What a weekend it was! Attendees included pastors, lay leaders, regional ministry leaders, national denominational leaders, wives and sons.

We Are Man In The Mirror

We're off and running at the Man in the Mirror Annual Summit. Lots of great presentations tonight. Pat reminded us that we are all Man in the Mirror. Not just the staff, but everyone here and that uses our resources. We are all Man in the Mirror. Kind of reminds me of that "We Are Marshall" movie.

We challenged the guys to do what is hard: reach every man in America with the Gospel; build a disciple-making ministry to men in every church in America and beyond.

Tomorrow we start the work, getting input on four key areas David Delk laid out for us to close:

Cirque du Soleil - a wonder to see! ($$$)

Here's another option for something to do either before or after the Summit: La Nouba at Circque du Soleil. This is an amazing production offered in Downtown Disney.

It is a bit expensive, with prices ranging from $53 to $117 per adult. But it is absolutely breathtaking to see. Here's a clip from a broadcast of the show:

Note: for some reason, there are no performances Jan 20-24, so you'd have to stay an extra day, or come earlier.

Budget Conscious Fun in the Orlando Area ($)

Of course, Orlando has tons of theme parks - Disney has 4, Universal has 2, plus Sea World and a ton of water parks. But there are less expensive things you can do as well.

I'm getting more excited every time I look at who's coming to the Summit in a few weeks. I'm seeing many leaders that I have enjoyed getting to know over the last few years. Guys from NCMM, from No Man Left Behind Conferences, from denominations I've worked with, from churches I've done
seminars at...

A Hot Time in the Old Town - Kissimmee ($)

This is the first post in a series on other things to do in Orlando either before or after the Summit (or BOTH!) Here's a great one for a family or a couple, and one of the less expensive ones as well.

Old Town in Kissimmee (say ki-SIM-ee, if you want to sound like a local)

Just south of the Orlando International Airport is Old Town, a unique amusement park and shopping area. Over 700 motorcyclists rally through the streets on Thursday nights. On Saturday nights Old Town comes to life with a vintage-car parade with over 300 cars. While the park offers live entertainment every night at 7:30 p.m., its Saturday night show (7 p.m.) plays exclusively ’50s and ’60s rock ‘n’ roll. Visitors must buy tickets for the amusement rides, but admission to Old Town, and its concerts and car shows, is free.

1/21 – 1/25: The National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS). Hundreds of beautifully restored and new Corvettes on will be on display. This is a must see car show! The best spectator days are the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. Swap meet and judging with show. For more information, visit www.ncrsfl.org.

Here's a fascinating take on the importance of the church reaching men from Mark Driscoll. This 5 minute video covers church planting at the beginning, but he quickly moves to talking about building your church by reaching men.

We know it's important to reach men, especially younger men. That will be one of the workshops offered at the Summit. The ELCA has done some great research lately, which they'll share with us. And we'll talk about what's working and not working in churches today. You won't want to miss this presentation and discussion.

Saving Money on Lodging

We've had lots of inquiries about finding places to stay to save money on lodging. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of options (OK, none) for free lodging at this point. However, we would encourage you to use comments on this post to connect with others who are attending to try and save money by sharing hotel rooms.

For the really adventurous, you might try one of those house rental services, like vrbo.com (http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/florida/central-disney-orlando/orlando) and rent a house for the week with a bunch of people. With a little web work you could be chillin' like a rock star while you're here! :-) Just make sure you ggogle the address to make sure it's not too far from First Baptist Church Orlando (not downtown, the one on LB McLeod Road).
